Relays

This last August at the NSRA Street Rod Nationals in Louisville, KY, I gave a very well received seminar on Relays. I believe that relays are one of the most dreaded electrical components because, of course, people don’t understand them. As long as you aren’t getting into actual “electronics” (like transistors, microchips and processors), relays are probably the most complicated item that you will encounter. But that doesn’t mean that they are all that difficult to learn about and to understand.

To help people better understand relays, we’ve put a helpful article on our website called A Current Topic. You can find it at http://www.watsons-streetworks.com/current_topic.html.
For the seminar, I also provided a helpful, one-page reference sheet for relays and we’ve put that information on the web at http://www.inglewoodct.us/StreetWorks/Relay_Quick_Reference_Sheet.html.

Of course, we also have a section on Relays in our ever popular Basic Auto Electricity Book which is still just $7.95 + S/H and you can get one of our free catalogs as well.

If you double the horsepower that your engine can make, you have to consider the implications to the transmission, drive train, rear end and the whole car. If you double the amperage load on a particular circuit, are you taking the same care to consider the implications to the rest of that circuit? You’d better.

Relays are the answer to many an electrical problem, so learn what they are, what they do and how they can help with your next wiring project.
